We are thrilled to have Amy Friend guest posting today for our Moda Size Matters Blog Hop!
Amy: Hi, it’s Amy from During Quiet Time here today to help BasicGrey with the Moda Size Matters Blog Hop! BasicGrey was assigned the traditional Susannah quilt block and I chose to design a table runner combining the Susannah block and BasicGrey’s Sweet Serenade fabric collection.
If you read my blog, you already know that I love paper piecing. So I decided to construct my blocks using a paper piecing technique. You can download the assembly diagram and pattern pieces by clicking here and the Susannah pattern on the Size Matters logo below.
I thought that an 8″ block would work well for a table runner project. It was small enough to allow me to make a double row of blocks including sashing without getting too wide. And I thought a double row would add a little more interest than just a single row of larger blocks. I alternated peach and blue based blocks and kept to the neutral cream prints for my background. The sashing strips are 2″ wide finished and the cornerstones are 2″ wide finished, should you want to make a similar runner. I quilted simply with diagonal straight lines. I love how that results in little “x’s” in the centers of the dark cornerstones!
It’s a fun block that could be used so many ways! I would probably go with a larger 12″ block if I were making a bed quilt, and perhaps a smaller block for a pieced panel on a bag or other small item.
