We are so happy to share the talented works of this month’s guest designer, Missy Whidden! Missy is one of those scrappers whose work appeals to just about everyone, and she has a style that brings fresh and innovative ideas to every page she creates. Whether you scraplift one of her pages or find yourself wanting to try a specific technique that she used, there is no doubt you will be inspired by the beautiful layouts she created using BasicGrey’s Sun Kissed collection. Hi there! I’m Missy Whidden, and I’ve been scrapping for almost ten years now. Right before my first daughter was born, my mother-in-law asked me to help her create a scrapbook of all my husband’s baby photos. I was instantly hooked on the paper and stickers! Fast forward to present time, and I’m more in love with scrapping than ever before. I love patterned paper and die cuts created on my Silhouette Cameo. I love anything mixed media related – paints, inks mists, gelatos – especially watercolors. I love getting messy and creating artsy-type layouts. I am honored to have served on many design teams over the years including My Mind’s Eye, Chickaniddy Crafts, Hip Kit Club, Shimmerz, The Cut Shoppe and My Scraps & More. I live in Central Florida and have been married to Marshall for over 15 years now. We’ve been a couple for almost 22! We have two beautiful daughters, Reese and Paige. When I’m not scrapping, you can find me in the gym teaching fitness classes.
Layout 1: Fabulous Flier
I just had to dive into all of these beautiful Sun Kissed patterned papers right away. I used several of them to die cut some butterflies on my Cameo. I wanted to have the element of flying since my daughter is flying through the air in the photo. I love how the light blue background paper reminds me of the sky, and these gorgeous colors look so pretty against it. The die cut word “fabulous” made it easy to create my title, and I paired that with some of the pink alpha stickers.
Layout 2: Main Squeeze
When I saw the cute lemon die cut, I knew I had to use that on a layout about me and my husband. I went with the lemon theme and used that adorable lemon patterned paper. I stuck to a blue, yellow and green color scheme with bits of the cork stickers added in. I added some white gesso to the papers and then came in with a few shades of yellow spray ink. I used a piece of plastic packaging to smudge the inks around, creating a fun watercolor effect. I die cut a messy circle and put my photos and most of the embellishments in and around it. I love the matching buttons in this collection! They look perfect mixed into the clusters.
Layout 3: Beauty
I wanted to go light and airy for this layout, and I decided to use more butterflies. I started with white cardstock and used a big floral die cut as a mask. I used pink and yellow spray inks over it to create the background design. I used a bit of blue spray ink as well for another pop of color. I used a few papers as layers behind my photo and then layered lots of die cuts and stickers to the right going across the page. I fussy cut that beautiful butterfly and the yellow trimmed oval from one of the patterned papers. I love all the colors mixed together, and the die cut word “beauty” was perfect for my title.
Layout 4: Sun Kissed
Since this collection is called Sun Kissed, I just had to create a layout using a cute pool picture! I cut a quilted design on my Cameo on white cardstock. I used quite a lot of the patterned papers to back the open spots. I left two rows open and used blue spray inks to create a water effect. I wanted to mimic the blue in the photo and make it look like water. I cut the title on one of the grey papers and split it on either side of my photo. I didn’t want to cover up any of the patterned paper areas, so I added a few long banner stickers toward the bottom of the page. I also added in some buttons and enamel dots and did some machine stitching. I love that those beautiful patterned papers take center stage on this layout!
I had so much fun working with the Sun Kissed collection. The colors instantly drew me in. I love bright colors and fun patterns, and this line is full of both. I love that it’s so versatile; there are lots of general sentiments, but there are also pieces relating to food, nature and love. I love how Basic Grey has such unique patterns, and they look amazing layered together or backed behind a die cut. I did a bit of both of those techniques for my projects. It’s a really fun and vibrant collection.
