On Trend | Kelly Goree

When we asked Kelly Goree to make a project featuring a trendy technique, we had no idea what she had in store for us. Instead of focusing on just one trend, Kelly went above and beyond and incorporated seven inspiring techniques on a single layout! Needless to say, we were blown away by her creativity and we’re positive you will be too!

Kelly: I have a confession: I am admittedly not overly trendy when it comes to my scrapbooking though I do try and incorporate the occasional “new hot thing” every once in a while. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t have a Pinterest account and see and LOVE some current trends! Just some of those that I have been noticing include gorgeous multi-layers (especially in photo matting), ink splatters, chevrons & arrows, Silhouette negative cuts AND die-cuts, fresh color combos like aqua & orange or yellow & grey, flair (both real and digital), and metallics. So I decided to challenge myself and see just how many of those fun trends I could use on just ONE layout (without it going over the edge! ;))

For this project about one of my favorite vacay photos ever, I used the gorgeous Carte Postale line and honed right in on the aqua and orange (trend #1!) papers in that collection. I definitely wanted to layer color under my fun photo, so I selected an accent color of yellow and created a banner with edges that I curved up for added texture (trend #2! I’m on a roll!).

And if you have seen the new Carte Postale wood veneer shapes, you’d have to have used those too! So I did! I grabbed up the cute geotag and the chevrons (wait – a trend within a trend! Does that count for 3, 4 AND 5?!), inked them with a bit of chalk ink and added them for a fun accent. And as my friend Mary Kay told me, flair is the new “flowers for boys” so I had to add a bit of it on there, too. I thought it looked really cute as the “O” in “explore” and gave me one more trend to add to my list (I think we’re up to 6!).

And finally…because I’ve always wanted to try it and fellow BG gal Marinette makes it look SO cool, I broke out my mists and added a few splatters. I so obviously need practice and I won’t tell you about the mess I made, but it did finish up my layout with a total of SEVEN (whoot!) trends! I promise I won’t ever do that many again, but I hope that it’s inspired you to do something a little different yourself!

Tell us your favorite trend right now and we’ll send someone the brand new Carte Postale collection pack to play with.

On Trend: Buttons

Aside from paper, buttons are easily the most versatile scrapbooking product to embellish any project with. Not only do they run the gamut in size, shape, and color but they also add an extra pop of dimension too! Today Kim Jeffress is here to share some fantastic ideas for incorporating buttons on your next layout:

I don’t know about you but over the years I seemed to have gathered in my stash a multitude of buttons. Today I wanted to share three easy and fun ways to use this scrapbooking staple on your next layout.

How about creating a cute border under your photo? I gathered a few buttons in two different colors and lined them up under my photo. I then used a push pin and pad to make holes so I could stitch them on. Next, I used some white embroidery thread and a large needle to stitch them to my page. For added interest I popped a small pin with a sticker on it to create a flag through the end button.

Confetti is all the rage at the moment so next I took a small glassine bag and popped some stars and sequins into it. I then dropped in some smaller buttons to bulk it out a bit and add some texture. Finally, I sealed it from the back with some double sided adhesive and added it to my layout.

Lastly, I stitched a button to a flower sticker and added it to my banner sticker. I love all the texture and depth these buttons create on my layout.

On Trend : Aqua and Orange

One of my favorite color combinations this season is Aqua & Orange. Well, actually, Mint and Coral are the trending colors of Spring but I personally prefer the deeper, richer, brighter hues so I put a little twist on it :) These are a few images I recently pinned for inspiration.

For my layout, I mixed different patterns from the the Hello and Hey Boy collections (oranges and aquas, of course!). Circles and stars matched the theme of the layout well, so I punched out the shapes and arranged them on the right side of the page next to a series of silly pictures.

On Trend : Groupings

BasicGrey | On Trend

My favorite decorating trend is definitely groupings. Groupings of anything, but especially artwork. I have them in every room in my house, so I decided to do a layout with one as well. And just like most of the groupings in my house, this layout also appears to be perfectly imperfect – ha! I kind of like it though, so I didn’t fix it.

My decorating board on Pinterest is full of artwork/photo groupings. Here are two of my recent favorites.

And here is my layout inspired by both photos!
