What a Week | Week One

BasicGrey | Capture

Happy Monday, everyone! Today I will be kicking off a new feature here on the blog where I share my “week at a glance” through Capture spreads. Sometimes they will be fairly simple, sometimes they will be more in-depth, but all of the time they will be indicative of how easy the Capture system is to use. For this week’s installment, I made a few introductory pages to set the tone for the spreads that will follow. Here’s how I did it:

For my first page, I used a June calendar pocket to hold tickets, receipts, brochures, etc. from this month’s adventures. I embellished the pocket with a few Carte Postale patterned papers, a Carte Postale brad, and a bicycle die-cut from one of the Capture waterfall packs.

Since I didn’t want the backside of the calendar page to be blank, I gathered together a few Snippets, a handful of Carte Postale products (including this ticket paper and this aqua paper), and a pair of scalloped scissors to jazz up the overall spread.

Although I design each page individually, I always make sure to consider the overall look of the two pages paired together. I do this by paying attention to the color palettes (is there too much of one color? not enough of another?), the scale of the embellishments, and whether or not the subjects on both pages tell the same story.

One of my new favorite techniques for customizing my Capture albums is to run one of the 6.5 x 9.5″ paper pad sheets through my Silhouette Cameo to create a large title. For this particular page, I wanted the “2013″ to be subtle, so I backed the ledger paper with white cardstock. As for the colorful embellishments below, I used a large Carte Postale Snippet, a mini RSVP Snippet (“Celebrate”), and a few other supplies including Candy Buttons, a Waterfall pack, and vellum tape.

I can’t wait to show you more spreads as the weeks unfold! Hope your Monday is off to a great start!

What A Week : BasicGrey + Ormolu

BasicGrey | What A Week

This month, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Ormolu for our What A Week series.  Diana from Ormolu’s design team and I have each created a layout documenting a week in our lives using the same products.

What A Week | Melanie Bauer

Knowing that we’d be working with our True Love collection, I chose to document Valentine’s week.  So appropriate!  Especially considering Valentine photos dominated this week’s layout.

What A Week | Melanie Bauer

[Left Page]  An impromptu visit to the hospital parking lot to say hello.  Valentine’s Day preschool class party.  Valentine mail from family and friends.  My sleepy valentine who happened to be on call for the holiday.  (And who will likely not be too happy I both took this photo and then shared it online.)

A new favorite song that my daughters adore.  Mid-term swimming evaluation for my daughter.

The journaling card is actually a sticker from the True Love Element Stickers – the perfect size for this project!

I really enjoyed pairing the Ormolu products with our True Love collection – they worked so well together!  For this card, I paired three different products to create a cohesive end look.  I topped the geotag stamp from Ormolu’s Word Up stamps with a heart from the True Love Alphabet Sticker sheet.  I also added a label from the Bungalow Little Labels | Moments sheet and an additional sentiment with the smaller alphabet from the alphabet sticker sheet.

[Right Page] Packing boxes in progress.  Roses from daddy.  Math homework.  Early Birthday present.

The two middle pockets contain the actual valentines that my daughters passed out to their friends.  By coincidence, they were the same size as the page protector pockets.  They both wrote their names on the back of their cards.  Love that a piece of their handwriting is forever saved in this album.

Heart shaped pizza.  Class valentines.  My handsome boy.

Another card with a fun mix of product.  Another Bungelow label, an ampresand from the Elements Stickers sheet and alphabet letters.  My photo was vertical in orientation but I wanted to make it a larger part of my layout so I chose to highlight it on a larger canvas made from the True Love 6×6 Paper Pad

2013 Hero Arts Catalog Blog Hop

Welcome to the 2013 Hero Arts Catalog Blog Hop! All of us at BasicGrey are big fans of our friends at Hero.  They not only manufacture the stamps that coordinate with each of our collections, but they’re also some of the nicest people you’ll ever hope to meet!

Earlier in the year, BasicGrey partnered with Hero in our What A Week blog series that paired our products with their stamps to document a week in a designer’s life.  I had so much fun the first time around that I decided to create another project using Hero’s newest stamps.  I limited my supplies to a 6×6 PB&J paper pad, three sheets of Sticker Micro Monograms.

I chose to document a week from this past summer.  My second month of being a mama to three children.  A local children’s event.  A spa day for dolls.  A visit from my husband’s parents.

Storytime.  Brownie baking.  Our son’s second month.  A project created at Home Depot.  A day trip to see family.

Can I tell you how much I fell in love with this CG517 Hexagon Background stamp?  It was gorgeous in the package but when i actually used it for the first time, I couldn’t believe how crisp the image was!  I see myself making many cards for my Project Life album with this stamp.  Stamped in Hero’s Soft Pool Shadow ink, it paired perfect with the paper I had selected from the PB&J paper pad.

To house the dates of the week I was creating, I used the frame image from the CL660 Tape Your Message set.  I used this set several times throughout my layout.  Definitely a keeper as it’s so versatile!

What I love most about using stamps in my Project Life album is the ability to make everything coordinate by simply switching ink colors.  For this journaling card, I paired a circle tag from CL660 Tape Your Message set with the S5637Tiny Ink Spots stamp.

Although this photo isn’t perfect by any means, I had to include it.  It was a hot day and we were inside for the afternoon when my daughters decided their dolls needed baths.  I obliged by providing Pyrex tubs for both of them – lucky dolls!  (Word on the street is that Santa is bringing real doll baths for Christmas – whew!)  The stamped “favorite” is a partial image from the CL651 My Favorites set.  This set is likely geared more towards card makers but I made it work for me by just stamping a single word on the stamp.

Three cards, three more examples of the CL660 Tape Your Message set in use!  The photo of my son uses the circle label style stamp to house his age.  The middle card utilizes the same stamp that I used in my title card for the page but this time I cut it in half to use at both the top and bottom of the card.  The third card uses one of the washi style images from the set.  Again, with the right color of ink, it’s a perfect match for PB&J!

Likely my favorite card from this layout.  The E5740 Heart Cupcake stamps was the perfect choice to pair with this photo of my youngest daughter helping me bake.  I used dimensional adhesive to have it stand out from the rest of the card.  I also used a small heart embellishment from a past Studio Calico kit to highlight the hearts on the top of the cupcake.

An arrow stamp?  Nope!  This “arrow” was created with the S5654 Tweed Pattern background stamp.  By using only a row of the large background image and trimming the end to a “v” I had an instant arrow that worked great for this photo.

Want a chance to win a Hero Arts prize pack?  Be sure to comment on this post letting them know what you think of their new stamps!  Hero will be randomly choosing winners from ALL blog hop comments received by midnight PST on Monday, December 17.

Thank you so much for stopping by the BG blog and to Hero Arts for including us in their hop!  Next it’s time to hop over to our friend Tami Hartley’s blog.

By the way… If we reach 20,000 Facebook Likes before Christmas, we’ll select one lucky fan at random to win a $100 shopping spree to basicgrey.com. Spend it on yourself or by something special for those on your list – the choice is yours!

What A Week : BasicGrey + Kelly Purkey Stamps

Welcome to another installment of our What A Week blog series!  This month, we’ve asked Kelly Purkey to join us as we pair her stamps with our Serenade collection.  She and I have each created a layout documenting a week in our lives using the same products.  We’ll also be giving you a chance to win the same products for use on your own weekly layout!

This month, I chose to document the 40th week of this year – just a few weeks ago!  I’m actually two plus months behind on documenting our weeks this year so I love that this week really documents what my life is currently like right now.

[Left Page] Four month well baby check-up.  The Met Life blimp.  PreK craft project.  Story time nametag.  Afternoon bike ride.  Monthly photo of all three kiddos.  A favorite toy.

Kelly’s October stamp is the reason why I skipped ahead to document a more current week in my album.  This stamp is also perfect to document your life in July 2013 – yes, I checked.  Simply cover the October with stickers and you’ve got the perfect calendar for that month as well!

My four year old’s handwriting is an ever evolving masterpiece.  I wanted to include her name tag from storytime this week and easily did so by simply trimming a sheet of paper from the Serenade 6×6 Paper Pad to fit this pocket and creatively cropping the name tag itself.

Kelly’s Magic stamp was the perfect match for this photo of my daughter riding her bike under these bright autumn leaves.  I actually used the stamp on the back of tag that was tied around the stamp’s handle.  A great repurpose of product packaging!

[Right Page] Craft time after breakfast.  A walk on the trail.  Post-nap snuggles.  4 month photoshoot.  Date night.  Our weekly Target trip.  Tiger fans.

I love using stamps for my weekly layouts as they’re so easy to customize.  Kelly’s Field Notes stamp and a strip of paper provided the perfect embellishment for this photo.

I love the Serenade alphabet stickers and how three different alphas are included on a single sheet.  I paired one sticker with a sticker from the Serenade Titles stickers for an easy embellishment for my son’s monthly photo.

Kelly’s Happiness Right Here stamp was the perfect choice paired with a business card of a new restaurant my husband and I tried on a date night.
